Use spectral methods to model and simulate, in 2-D and in 3-D, the laminar flow in the lid-driven cavity and in the thermo-capillarity driven cavity. The driven cavity is the model problem for a large number of transport problems such as chemical etching, thermo-capillary motion in liquid bridges and flows in closed geometries such as liquid drops. The focus of this research is to find when an instability will appear in the cavity. The challenge is to characterize the transition to unsteadiness. This work is collaborative between the University of Florida and University of Paris XI.
