Research Description: Our research group is aiming at understanding instability mechanisms of thermocapillary convection in liquid bridge of high Prandtl number fluid. This study contributes to the expansion of our knowledge about fluid dynamics involving liquid-gas interfaces and also to the control of the convection that appears in industrial applications involving crystal growth, welding and evaporation. Both experimental and numerical techniques are utilized. In particular, the microgravity environment on the International Space Station is exploited to resolve the details of the instability mechanisms in large-scale liquid bridges.
