Research Description: My research group, Interfacial thermo-fluid lab, has five major topics in research activities; (1) gas/vapor bubble dynamics, (2) instabilities, (3) particle-laden flow, (4) surface-tension-driven flow, and (5) wetting/dewetting processes. In the topic (1), I’m interested in volume/shape oscillation in periodic pressure field, condensation/collapse of vapor bubble in subcooled pool etc. Topic (2) consists of sub-topics such as dynamics of impinging jet to flowing fluid, transition of surface-tension driven flow, and dendrite growth in thermo-fluid flow. In the topic (3), ‘coffee stain problem,’ particle accumulation structure (PAS) in nonlinear thermocapillary-driven flow are the major themes. In the topic (4), nonlinear flows in geometries such as liquid bridge, liquid film, free liquid layer. Microgravity experiments have been also carried out. ‘Tears of wine’ is a typical example of this project. Topic (5) includes wetting in fibrous porous media, precursor film formation, spinodal dewetting, etc. Applications of our work are in heat and mass transfer/exchange systems, crystal growth, microfluidics, chemical sensing, and materials processing.
